Length Converter
Convert measurements used for drilling, mapping, sampling, and field work.
UNIT CONVERSIONS
Convert common units used in geology, exploration, drilling, mining, and assay reporting.
CONVERSION TOOLS
Select a conversion category, enter a value, and choose the units to convert between.
Convert measurements used for drilling, mapping, sampling, and field work.
Convert map, claim, property, and project areas between common metric and imperial units.
Convert laboratory, sample, mining, and resource mass units.
Convert common assay and grade units used in mineral exploration and mining.
For mass-based solid assays, 1 ppm is equivalent to 1 g/t. Ounces per short ton are expressed as troy ounces per short ton.
REFERENCE
Geological work frequently combines metric and imperial measurements. Drill programs, historical reports, assay certificates, property areas, resource estimates, and field measurements may use different unit systems, making reliable conversion an important part of comparing geological data.
LENGTH & DISTANCE
Length conversions are commonly needed when comparing drillhole depths, sample intervals, map distances, and measurements reported using different unit systems.
1 inch = 2.54 centimeters
1 foot = 0.3048 meters
1 yard = 0.9144 meters
1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers
AREA
Exploration properties, mining claims, geological maps, and project areas may be reported in hectares, acres, square meters, square feet, or square kilometers.
1 hectare = 10,000 m²
1 km² = 100 hectares
1 acre = 4,046.8564224 m²
1 acre = 43,560 ft²
MASS & TONNAGE
Geological workflows span very different scales, from laboratory samples measured in grams to mineral resources and mine production reported in tonnes or short tons.
1 kilogram = 1,000 grams
1 pound = 0.45359237 kilograms
1 metric tonne = 1,000 kilograms
1 short ton = 2,000 pounds
1 metric tonne ≈ 1.102311 short tons
GRADE & ASSAY
Mineral assays may be reported using parts per billion, parts per million, percent, grams per tonne, or troy ounces per short ton depending on the commodity, concentration, laboratory, and reporting convention.
1 ppm = 1 g/t
1,000 ppb = 1 ppm
1% = 10,000 ppm
1% = 10,000 g/t
1 oz/st ≈ 34.2857 g/t
The equivalence between ppm and g/t applies to mass-based solid concentrations. In this calculator, oz/st refers to troy ounces of contained material per short ton.
WORKED EXAMPLES
Drilling: 1,000 ft × 0.3048 = 304.8 m
Property area: 500 acres ≈ 202.343 hectares
Tonnage: 1,000,000 metric tonnes ≈ 1,102,311 short tons
Gold assay: 5 g/t Au ≈ 0.1458 oz/st Au
Geochemical assay: 500 ppb Au = 0.5 ppm Au = 0.5 g/t Au
LIMITATIONS
Unit conversion changes the way a measurement is expressed; it does not change the underlying geological observation. Care should be taken to distinguish units that describe different physical quantities and to preserve appropriate precision when converting reported measurements.
Assay conversions also depend on the reporting convention. Percent, ppm, ppb, and g/t relationships shown here assume mass-based solid concentrations. Users should verify the units and analytical basis reported by the laboratory or original data source before comparing results.
